- Lochside Views: Some couples choose to have their ceremony on the lawn at the side of the castle so that their photos have the most iconic images of Eilean Donan as their background. This area is close to the flagpole, and you may wish to add the lowering of the Saltire as part of your ceremony. You can then take the flag home as a keepsake of your wedding day — a truly unique memento, available for £120.
Ceremony Timings & Restrictions
Because Eilean Donan is a working visitor attraction, weddings are carefully scheduled around opening times:
- March to November: Ceremonies take place once the castle closes to the public, with hire available from 6pm – 8pm.
- November, December & February: You can hire the castle during the day and hold your ceremony in the afternoon between Noon and 2pm.
- January: The castle is completely closed for annual maintenance. It’s also important to note that food is not permitted inside the castle. Couples may host a drinks reception following their ceremony, but canapés or any other catering are not allowed within the walls. This makes the castle a perfect setting for the ceremony itself and an intimate toast before moving on to a nearby venue for dining and celebrations.

Eilean Donan is wonderfully accessible, just a short drive from the Isle of Skye in the village of Dornie. - Photography & Daylight: In the summer months, golden-hour light after the ceremony is magical. But in the Spring and Autumn, ceremonies still begin at 6:30pm, leaving little daylight after the ceremony for portraits. I therefore recommend a first look before the ceremony to capture beautiful couple portraits with the castle while there’s still light.
