My Top Wedding Day Tips

After planning and coordinating so many weddings here in the Highlands, I’ve gathered a little collection of tips that make the day flow more smoothly. These aren’t just about logistics – they’re about making sure you feel calm, present, and able to soak up every moment of your wedding day.

Here are my favourite pieces of advice for couples:

  1. Allow plenty of time to get into your dress
It always takes longer than you expect. I recommend setting aside at least an hour for getting into your wedding dress, especially if you’re planning a first look or photos with family before leaving for the ceremony. That extra time allows you to breathe, sip some fizz, and enjoy the moment without rushing.
  1. Have a “dress expert” in your bridal party
Make sure at least one person knows exactly how your dress fastens. If you have delicate buttons with elasticated loops, kirby grips (bobby pins) are brilliant for getting them fastened quickly. Practice this with them beforehand if possible, so there are no surprises on the day.
  1. Face your loved ones during your vows
One of my favourite tips: instead of standing the “traditional” way during your vows, swap around so that your family/friends can see your faces. Simply – Have your family and friends on the opposite side to where you’re standing (same for the groom/partner) This way, your nearest and dearest get to witness your emotions and expressions – it makes the ceremony feel so much more personal and intimate.
  1. Two hours is perfect for your drinks reception
Couples sometimes worry that a two-hour cocktail or drinks reception will feel too long – but I promise, it’s just right. It gives you time for mingling, family photos, and being whisked away for those gorgeous couple portraits without feeling rushed. Guests are perfectly happy with drinks, nibbles, and music, as long as they know what’s happening next.
  1. Consider a “first look” with a parent or loved one
A first look isn’t just for the couple – it can be a beautiful moment with a parent, grandparent, or sibling. It’s emotional, grounding, and creates a memory you’ll treasure forever.
  1. Keep comfortable shoes handy
Even if you adore your wedding shoes, your feet will thank you for having flats or trainers ready for later in the evening. Comfort doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style – think sparkly converse or soft ballet flats that still feel special. (If you plan to do couple portraits in the wilderness then perhaps wellies / walking boots would be a better choice!)
  1. Build in ‘breathing space’
The day will fly by. Try to carve out ten minutes just for the two of you after the ceremony, before you head into the whirlwind of the reception – perhaps before the confetti throw if you’re having one. Stepping aside to take a breath together helps you soak it all in. Another moment together that works well is during dessert – if you’re looking for ‘golden hour’ portraits then it’s a good time to sneak away with your photographer and guests won’t even realise you’re missing!.
  1. Don’t forget about lighting
Whether it’s fairy lights, candles, or lanterns, good lighting transforms a space and creates atmosphere. Think about how the room will feel as the evening falls – soft, romantic light makes everything magical.
  1. Steam clothing night before
If possible steam dresses the night before the wedding. This just means more time in the morning for you and the girls. Emotions can run high, timings can be tight – so the last thing you need to be worrying about is trying to get creases out of dresses!
  1. Remember – it’s about the two of you
At the heart of it all, the day is about your love and your marriage. Traditions and details are wonderful, but the most important thing is that you feel relaxed, connected, and able to enjoy the moment together!

If you’d love peace of mind that all the details are taken care of and would like someone by your side with lots more tips then please get in touch – I’d love to hear from you!
