One thing I love about my job as a wedding planner is helping couples discover their dream wedding venue here in the Scottish Highlands. Watching guests arrive and experience the beauty, history, and hospitality that this part of Scotland offers is always so special.
Searching for the right venue can feel overwhelming — especially when you’re planning from abroad. I’m always happy to visit venues I haven’t worked at before, and my couples find it incredibly helpful when I share video footage so they can get a true sense of the space and its atmosphere. To help narrow down the choices, I always suggest focusing first on what matters most to you both — the must haves— and then deciding where you’re happy to compromise. Once you’re clear on your priorities, the perfect venue will begin to stand out.

Below, I’ve shared some helpful tips on finding your perfect Highland wedding venue.
Exclusive Use Venues
Many couples dream of having a castle or country estate entirely to themselves for their wedding celebrations. The Scottish Highlands are full of private, exclusive-use venues — from romantic lochside manors to grand historic castles. Exclusivity often comes with a requirement to book all bedrooms, and sometimes not all guests can stay on-site, so it’s worth checking nearby accommodation options.
TIP: An important decision you will need to make is whether having a venue entirely to yourselves is one of your priorities — even if that means paying extra for exclusivity — or if you’d be just as happy celebrating somewhere that’s open to the public and shared with others.

Venue Layout and Spaces
It’s always good to ask how the different spaces at your venue can be used. Can your ceremony take place outdoors or in a beautiful hall? Is there a separate space for dinner and dancing? Where is the bar located in relation to the main function space – believe it or not this has a major impact on the overall atmosphere. What happens if the Highland weather decides to turn a little misty (which can be utterly romantic, by the way!)? A good venue will have seamless indoor and outdoor options.
TIP: Ask the venue to walk you through how your day could flow from ceremony to dinner to dancing. It’s helpful to know how spaces transition and what happens if plans need to change due to weather. The best venues will have beautiful alternatives ready, ensuring your day feels effortless no matter what the Highland weather does.

Your Vision
What do you want your day to feel like? Intimate and romantic by a loch? Grand and elegant in a castle ballroom? Wild and free on a Highland estate surrounded by nature? From rustic barns to luxurious manors, the Highlands offer endless possibilities — it’s all about finding the place that reflects your story.
TIP: If you’re planning from overseas, you may not get the chance to visit venues in person — and that’s absolutely fine. I spend time getting to know my couples and their vision, then personally visit and film venues that match their style, giving them a true sense of the atmosphere, flow, and feeling of each space. I can also help you short list and decide on a venue based on your vision and priorities for your day.

Your Wedding Budget
Your budget will naturally shape your venue search. In most cases, your venue, catering, and drinks will make up the largest portion of your overall spend. Once you have a clear idea of what you’d like to allocate to these elements, many other decisions will flow more easily.
TIP: Before venue hunting, set a clear overall budget and decide roughly what portion you’d like to dedicate to the venue and catering. This helps you focus on places that are realistic for your vision — and prevents falling in love with a venue that stretches you too far.

Number of Guests
Think about your guest list early on. I usually suggest assuming that around 10–15% of invitees may not be able to attend, especially for destination weddings. This will give you a realistic number to work with when checking the capacity of potential venues.
TIP: Ask venues how flexible they are if your guest list changes. Some will have a minimum number of guests for exclusive use, while others are more adaptable. Having a little flexibility can make a big difference if your final numbers shift closer to the day.

Accommodation
Would you like all your guests to stay with you, or are you happy for some to stay nearby? Some venues offer beautiful cottages or lodges within walking distance, while others partner with nearby inns or hotels. Consider the comfort, travel ease, and experience you want your guests to have over the weekend.
TIP: Ask the venue for a list of recommended nearby accommodations — especially for larger guest lists. Many Highland estates have strong local partnerships and can help coordinate everything from shuttle transfers to breakfast the next morning, making the weekend feel seamless for your guests.

Styling and Décor
Are you dreaming of a venue that’s already styled to perfection — or one that you can make your own with personal touches? Some of my couples love venues that need little more than flowers and candlelight, while others enjoy creating something truly bespoke with décor and design. And remember — you don’t have to do it alone! I can handle all the coordination, styling, and supplier bookings for you.
TIP: When considering a venue, ask if you can see photos of previous weddings there. It’s a wonderful way to visualise how different styles can work within the space — and spark ideas and inspiration of how to make it feel uniquely yours.

Location and Accessibility
If you’re travelling from abroad, think about how easily guests can reach your venue. Inverness Airport connects beautifully with the rest of the Highlands, and from there, the scenic drives into different areas are simply breathtaking. You might also want to consider what’s nearby for your guests to explore — castles, distilleries, lochs, and mountain walks make for wonderful weekend experiences.
TIP: Consider arranging a welcome dinner or relaxed gathering the evening before the wedding. It’s a lovely way for guests who’ve travelled from afar to settle in, meet one another, and start soaking up the Highland magic before the big event.

The Smaller Details
Ask about the little things too — sound systems, microphones for speeches, extension options for your bar, or any supplier restrictions. These small considerations make a big difference in how smoothly your day flows.

Bringing It All Together
Once you’ve made your list of priorities — what you would like most and what you can be flexible about — your venue search becomes much easier. Remember, it doesn’t have to tick every box perfectly, there are always ways round making things work. The right venue will feel like you.
I love guiding couples through this process. During an initial consultation, we talk through your vision, guest numbers, and preferences. From there, I research and shortlist a handful of venues that truly align with your dream.

If you’d like some help finding your perfect wedding venue in the Scottish Highlands, I’d love to hear from you. Together, we’ll uncover a setting that captures your hearts and sets the scene for a day filled with love, laughter, and Highland magic.
